The Benefits of Moisture-Wicking Fabrics in Sportswear

In the world of sports and fitness, the right apparel can significantly impact performance and comfort. One of the most crucial advancements in sportswear technology is the development of moisture-wicking fabrics. These fabrics are designed to pull moisture away from the skin, allowing athletes to perform at their best without the discomfort of sweat-soaked clothing. In this post, we will explore what moisture-wicking fabrics are, how they work, their benefits, and considerations for choosing the right moisture-wicking apparel. What Are Moisture-Wicking Fabrics? Moisture-wicking fabrics are textiles engineered to draw moisture away from the body and allow it to evaporate quickly. Unlike traditional fabrics, which absorb moisture and can become heavy and uncomfortable, moisture-wicking materials keep the skin dry and comfortable during physical activity. These fabrics are commonly used in athletic clothing, including shirts, shorts, leggings, and socks. How Do Moisture-Wicking Fabrics Work? Moisture-wicking fabrics utilize a combination of material properties and construction techniques to transport moisture away from the skin. Here’s how they work: Benefits of Moisture-Wicking Fabrics The advantages of moisture-wicking fabrics are numerous, particularly for athletes and fitness enthusiasts. Here are some key benefits: 1. Enhanced Comfort One of the most significant benefits of moisture-wicking fabrics is the increased comfort they provide during physical activity. By keeping sweat away from the skin, these fabrics help prevent chafing, irritation, and the discomfort associated with damp clothing. This allows athletes to focus on their performance rather than their apparel. 2. Improved Performance When athletes are comfortable, they can perform at their best. Moisture-wicking fabrics help regulate body temperature by reducing the clamminess caused by sweat. This is particularly important in high-intensity sports, where overheating can lead to fatigue and decreased performance. Staying dry and cool allows athletes to maintain their focus and energy levels throughout their workouts. 3. Temperature Regulation Moisture-wicking fabrics are designed to help regulate body temperature by allowing sweat to evaporate quickly. This is especially beneficial in warm weather when excessive sweating can lead to overheating. By keeping the skin dry, moisture-wicking apparel helps maintain a comfortable body temperature, enhancing performance and endurance. 4. Odor Control Many moisture-wicking fabrics are treated with antimicrobial agents that help reduce the growth of odor-causing bacteria. This means that even after intense workouts, your apparel is less likely to retain unpleasant odors. This is particularly advantageous for athletes who train frequently and want to maintain freshness. 5. Lightweight and Quick-Drying Moisture-wicking fabrics are often lightweight and designed to dry quickly. This means that if your clothing gets wet, whether from sweat or rain, it will dry faster than traditional fabrics. This quick-drying capability is especially advantageous for athletes who may need to transition between activities or environments. 6. Versatility Moisture-wicking fabrics are versatile and suitable for a wide range of activities, from running and cycling to yoga and team sports. They can be found in various styles and designs, making it easy to find apparel that fits your personal preferences and needs. Considerations for Choosing Moisture-Wicking Apparel While moisture-wicking fabrics offer numerous benefits, not all moisture-wicking apparel is created equal. Here are some factors to consider when selecting the right moisture-wicking clothing for your needs: 1. Material Composition Look for fabrics made from synthetic materials such as polyester, nylon, or blends that include spandex. These materials typically offer superior moisture-wicking properties compared to natural fibers like cotton, which absorb moisture rather than wick it away. 2. Fit and Comfort Ensure that the moisture-wicking apparel fits well and allows for freedom of movement. Clothing that is too tight may restrict movement, while overly loose clothing can lead to chafing and discomfort. Look for designs that provide a balance of support and flexibility. 3. Breathability Consider the breathability of the fabric, especially if you plan to engage in high-intensity activities. Fabrics with mesh panels or ventilation features can enhance airflow and improve overall comfort. 4. Care Instructions Check the care instructions for moisture-wicking apparel. Some fabrics may require specific washing methods to maintain their moisture-wicking properties. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations to maximize the lifespan and performance of your clothing. 5. Brand Reputation Choose reputable brands known for their quality and performance. Research reviews and testimonials from other athletes to ensure that the moisture-wicking apparel you select meets your expectations. Conclusion Moisture-wicking fabrics have revolutionized sportswear, providing athletes with comfort, performance, and versatility. By efficiently managing moisture, these fabrics enhance the overall experience of physical activity, allowing you to focus on your performance rather than discomfort. When choosing moisture-wicking apparel, consider the material, fit, breathability, and brand reputation to find the best options for your needs. Embrace the benefits of moisture-wicking fabrics and elevate your athletic experience, whether you’re hitting the gym, running outdoors, or participating in your favorite sports. Happy training!

The Ultimate Father’s Day Gift Guide for Runners (2024)

HOW IT WORKS I’m a dad. Thomas is a dad. We’re friends with a lot of dads. Many of our readers are dads. So we kinda know what dads like. More specifically– what running dads like. Shoes, of course, but we cover that side of things day in and day out here at Believe in the Run. We have other hobbies and interests too. Which is why we put together a gift guide of some of our favorite things from some of our favorite brands out there. Maybe it’s running related, maybe it’s running adjacent. Either way, it’ll make for a good gift for that dad in your life. Now go and get yourself something to celebrate fatherhood, because everyone knows material things are the only fill that void in your life, something family could never replace. A just-right 6.5” inseam and two hand pockets (and one rear pocket) tie the whole thing together for the perfect fit with all the right details. APPAREL Abercrombie Olympics Collection ($40) Not sure how the hell Abercrombie ended up licensing all the old-school Olympics branding, but we are 100% here for it and you should be too. The featured hat is one of them, but they also have replica t-shirts and sweatshirts that bring back the nostalgia with events ranging from the 1984 Los Angeles Games to the 2004 Athens games. We want them all. FOOTWEAR Nike Pegasus Trail 5 ($150) Year in and year out, we love this shoe and it only keeps getting better. The designs and colorways are still unbeatable and it offers the most cushioned ride yet with a midsole of ReactX foam. It also features Path Project’s awesome watch window in the sleeve– a must-have once you have it. ACCESSORIES Bose Open Ear Headphones ($299) If there’s one thing that’s our favorite thing of all, it may be the Bose Open Ear headphones. There’s a reason Bose is still the best, and now they just single handedly took down their entire bone conduction competitor group in one fell swoop. Support something cool and get something that means something in this digital hellscape. FOOTWEAR On Cloudrunner 2 ($150) If nothing else, this shoe looks amazing. The gold standard in ultra lightweight backpacking and camp chairs, Helinox expanded its offerings to include the Chair Two, featuring a high-back design for more comfort and versatility. Packs down into a small package, easily transportable for those post-run hangs or kids’ baseball games. ACCESSORIES Kapik1 Coffee Ultrarunner and explorer (and former podcast guest) Ray Zahab also knows how to roast some damn good coffee, which we can attest to. Whether it’s the Sahara Sunrise medium roast or Arctic Winter Dark roast, it’s all ethically grown, ethically sourced from small-scale farmers, and all inspired by the team’s many expeditions. APPAREL Roark Baja Shorts ($66) One of our favorite overall shorts, the Roark Baja has a cellphone stash pocket with a water-resistant lining, which

Running Gear We Love Right Now

HOW IT WORKS We get a lot of gear to review here at Believe in the Run. Sometimes we get a whole seasonal collection to review, but more often than not, we get a bunch of items meant for different purposes. Some nutrition here, a couple hats there, tack on some casual pants and maybe some socks. If you’re like us, you probably don’t want to read a review about just one pair of socks, or a backpack, or whatever. But if we’re using something all the time– if it’s become part of our running life– we want you to know. That’s where this monthly roundup comes in. Each month, we give you a list of items that we really, truly love. Everything on this list is something we keep coming back to again and again. Maybe it’s the fit, maybe it’s the performance, maybe it’s just something we can’t explain. But at the end of the day, we love it, and we hope you do too. Of course, we’re always looking for new gear to fall in love with, so if you have any recommendations yourself, please leave them in the comments below. THE RUNNING GEAR WE LOVE RIGHT NOW THOMAS’S PICK #1 Near Earth Race Day Sock I have picked Near Earth Distance Socks previously, and they got me again. The Race Day Sock is lighter weight and thinner than the Distance Sock, but has the same perfect fit. If you like the Nike Spark Socks or Bandit Socks, the Near Earth Sock is even better with an anatomical fit, made with ECONYL® yarn from regenerated nylon waste and knitted with 100% renewable energy, waste recycling, and micro-plastic filtration., and a clean design that goes with any kit. Check them out for yourself. MEAGHAN’S PICK #1 Bandit Litewave 4” Rush Short ($88) These are quite literally the softest, most comfortable running shorts I’ve ever worn. A ruched waistband and external drawcord allow for the perfect fit and the drape-y aesthetic and 4” length make them great for going straight from the run to the coffee shop.  ROBBE’S PICK #1 Fractel x BITR Robbe Raccoon Signature L-Series Legionnaire ($55) In my wildest dreams, I’d never imagine I’d have a signature piece of apparel, but here we are. And the fact that it’s a Legionnaire couldn’t be more perfect. With an embroidered raccoon and copy of my signature on the front and a tail-style cape with “Break Ankles, Not Hearts” tagline on the back, the running mullet is here for all your summer runs. Repel the sun’s harmful rays while attracting the looks of a thirst-trap gaze. THOMAS’S PICK #2 Ombraz Cammina ($160) Running, swimming, cycling– whatever your sport, the armless sunglasses from Ombraz are perfect for it. The all-new aerospace grade TR-90 Cammina frames give off the perfect, laid-back summer vibes and the polarized lenses keep things clear. I was skeptical off the armless design, but they stay on perfectly– not too tight without any bounce. Also, it’s nice to know you’ll never lose them. MEAGHAN’S PICK #2 Lululemon Power Stride Tab Socks ($58 / 5-pack) Ok, I know all the cool kids are wearing crew socks these days, but it’s getting real warm here in Baltimore and nothing beats a thin, comfortable ankle sock in the heat. I happened to have a gift card to Lululemon and picked up a pack of these and have no regrets.  ROBBE’S PICK #2 Janji Multipass Mini ($38) It’s safe to say that we’ve been huge fans of the original Multipass Slingbag for years; we’ve put it in almost every gear roundup and gift guide since 2020. So we’re pretty stoked that Janji just released a follow-up to that winner. This lil’ guy packs a big punch with three zippered compartments, interior key loop and Nite-Ize S-biner. Plus, the exterior bungee system is a really cool and useful design. It’s the perfect companion for all those little essentials. RYAN’S PICK #1 IceMule Pro Cooler ($145) When the main team is away, the kids will play. Cheribundi sent us a branded IceMule Pro Cooler while Thomas and crew were in Italy, and I adopted it as our beer cooler for Baltimore’s bike party and haven’t looked back. The roll-top design makes it easy to access everything you need, and the backpack-style design means you can lug it just about anywhere. So far, I’ve packed it with a case of beer, ice, bottled water, and a gallon of ice cream for a trail gating after party— just not all at once, but they all stayed ice cold for hours. RYAN’S PICK #2 HydraPak SkyFlask Speed ($30) It’s already damn hot outside here in Baltimore, and that means it’s time to start running with hydration. I hate running with a stiff bottle, but give me a soft flask with a hand loop and I’m a happy customer. I actually have the smaller 350mL version of the SkyFlask Speed, but the extra 150mL goes a long way.

Eco-Friendly Sports Apparel: Sustainable Choices for Athletes

As the world becomes increasingly aware of environmental issues, the demand for eco-friendly products, including sports apparel, has surged. Athletes and fitness enthusiasts are not only concerned about performance and comfort; they are also looking for clothing that reflects their values and commitment to sustainability. This post will explore the importance of eco-friendly sports apparel, the materials and practices involved, and how athletes can make informed choices when selecting sustainable gear. The Importance of Sustainable Sports Apparel The fashion industry, including sportswear, significantly impacts the environment. From resource extraction to manufacturing processes and waste disposal, traditional apparel production can contribute to pollution, deforestation, and excessive waste. Here are some key reasons why sustainable sports apparel matters: 1. Reducing Environmental Impact Eco-friendly sports apparel aims to minimize its carbon footprint and overall environmental impact. Sustainable practices can reduce water usage, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and decrease reliance on non-renewable resources. 2. Supporting Ethical Practices Many eco-friendly brands prioritize ethical labor practices, ensuring fair wages and safe working conditions for their employees. By choosing sustainable sports apparel, consumers can support companies that value social responsibility. 3. Promoting Conscious Consumerism As athletes become more aware of environmental issues, they are increasingly interested in making conscious purchasing decisions. Eco-friendly sports apparel encourages consumers to think critically about their buying habits and the impact of their choices. 4. Enhancing Brand Loyalty Brands that prioritize sustainability often build strong relationships with consumers who value eco-friendly practices. Athletes are more likely to stay loyal to brands that align with their values and contribute positively to the environment. Materials Used in Eco-Friendly Sports Apparel Sustainable sports apparel is made from various eco-friendly materials, each with its unique benefits. Here are some of the most common materials used in eco-friendly sports clothing: 1. Organic Cotton Overview: Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, making it a more sustainable option than conventional cotton. Benefits: 2. Recycled Polyester Overview: Recycled polyester is made from post-consumer plastic bottles and other plastic waste, transforming discarded materials into high-performance fabrics. Benefits: 3. Tencel (Lyocell) Overview: Tencel is a sustainable fabric made from wood pulp, typically sourced from eucalyptus trees. The production process uses a closed-loop system that recycles water and solvents. Benefits: 4. Hemp Overview: Hemp is a highly sustainable crop that requires little water and no pesticides. It is known for its strength and durability. Benefits: 5. Bamboo Overview: Bamboo fabric is derived from the bamboo plant, which grows quickly and requires minimal resources. Benefits: Sustainable Practices in Sports Apparel Production In addition to using eco-friendly materials, many brands adopt sustainable practices throughout the production process. Here are some key practices to look for: 1. Water Conservation Sustainable apparel manufacturers often implement water-saving techniques in their production processes. This includes using technology to minimize water usage during dyeing and finishing. 2. Energy Efficiency Many eco-friendly brands utilize renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind power, in their manufacturing facilities. This reduces reliance on fossil fuels and lowers greenhouse gas emissions. 3. Waste Reduction Sustainable brands aim to minimize waste through various strategies, including: 4. Transparent Supply Chains Brands committed to sustainability often prioritize transparency in their supply chains. This includes sharing information about sourcing, manufacturing processes, and labor practices, allowing consumers to make informed choices. How to Choose Eco-Friendly Sports Apparel When looking for sustainable sports apparel, consider the following tips: 1. Research Brands Take the time to research brands that prioritize sustainability. Look for certifications, such as Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) or OEKO-TEX, which indicate environmentally friendly practices. 2. Read Labels Check product labels for information about materials and production practices. Look for items made from sustainable materials like organic cotton or recycled polyester. 3. Invest in Quality Choose high-quality apparel designed to last. Opting for durable clothing reduces the need for frequent replacements and minimizes waste. 4. Consider Second-Hand Options Shopping for second-hand or vintage sports apparel can be an eco-friendly choice. It extends the life of clothing and reduces demand for new products. 5. Support Local Brands Consider supporting local brands that prioritize sustainability. Many smaller companies focus on eco-friendly practices and contribute positively to their communities. Conclusion As the demand for sustainable products continues to grow, eco-friendly sports apparel is becoming an essential choice for athletes and fitness enthusiasts who care about the environment. By selecting clothing made from sustainable materials and supporting brands that prioritize ethical practices, consumers can make a positive impact on the planet while enjoying high-performance apparel. Embrace the shift towards sustainability in sportswear, and make informed choices that reflect your values as an athlete and a conscious consumer. Together, we can work towards a more sustainable future for the sports industry and the planet. Happy training!

Best Marathon Shoes for Running Your Best Race in 2024

You’ve trained for months, maybe even longer. Early mornings in the dark, weekend long runs, countless gels and hydration mixes and probably a lot of sugar cravings. All for one day in the fall or spring, showing what you’re made of for 26.2 miles. Sure, you could arrive at the start line in that pair of daily trainers that already have 350 miles on them. Or you could look good and feel great in a fresh pair of carbon-plated race day shoes, something that’s both a reward for hard work and a way to harness it all for its full potential. Are you gonna finish either way? Of course. But may as well give it your best shot. That said, all race day shoes are not created equal. Some are meant for shorter distances, some say they’re meant for the marathon but are really meant for a half marathon (sorry, we love you On Cloudboom Echo 3, but we’re not Helen Obiri), while others just shouldn’t be on the feet of those giving it their best (not naming names, but IYKYK).  Great shoe, for a half marathon The rest that make the cut are all pretty great, but there are some key differences that may affect what you want to put underfoot on race day. That’s why we’ll tell you why we love each shoe, but we’ll also tell you its best use-case and which running preference it’ll suit best. The ever-elusive Adidas Adizero Adios Evo Pro 1 This is our list for now, but check back often; we’ll be shuffling things around and updating it as more shoes become available (e.g., the Adidas Adios Pro 3 did not make this list because we’re ready for the next version, which is hopefully coming soon). We also didn’t include the lightest and most premium race shoe ever made (the Adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 1) because it’s virtually impossible to get at the moment. For reference, the following list is in alphabetical order, with no given preference to any shoe, though you can probably guess which ones are our favorites from the reviews. Asics Metaspeed Edge/Sky Paris $250 KEY FEATURES Flytefoam Turbo Plus midsole (Asics’ version of PEBA), Motionwrap 2.0 upper, ASICSGRIP outsole, different design for different runners WEIGHT 6.4 oz. (183 g) for a US M9 (unisex), both shoes STACK HEIGHT/DROP 39.5 mm in heel, 34.5 mm in forefoot (5 mm drop), both shoes The past versions of the Metaspeed Sky/Edge were quick and snappy but left a little bit to be desired in the comfort department. Asics listened and delivered with the Metaspeed Sky and Edge Paris, both named after the upcoming Olympics location. The Edge Paris, in particular, gets an extra 3.5 mm of foam in the midfoot, providing a softer landing than even the Sky Paris. Both shoes feature FlyteFoam Turbo+, a Peba-style midsole material that is both super lightweight and ultra bouncy. While we think Asics should streamline the Metaspeed models into one shoe to eliminate any confusion, there is a difference between the two. While the Sky Paris features a flatter carbon-fiber plate and is aimed toward stride-based runners, we’ve found that it’s actually a bit more of a responsive shoe compared to the softer Edge Paris, which has that extra forefoot foam sitting above a levered, scoop-style plate. It’s gonna come down to personal preference, but whatever you choose, you can know that you’re getting an incredibly lightweight race day shoe that feels fantastic underfoot. Diadora Gara Carbon $300 KEY FEATURES Softer Anima PBX midsole, premium Matryx upper, carbon fiber plate WEIGHT 8.1 oz. (229 g) for a US M10/UK 9 STACK HEIGHT/DROP 39 mm in heel, 34 mm in forefoot (5 mm drop) We’re as surprised as you are that this shoe is on the list. In the past, Diadora has released some decent trainers that double as lifestyle shoes, but they could never seem to nail down the pure running shoe. That’s all changed in 2024, as Diadora has definitely upped their game to the same level as the heavy hitters. Nothing says that more than the Gara Carbon, a carbon-plated shoe with a Pebax midsole that excels on race day. It’s bouncy, it’s light, and it’s fast. The Matryx upper may feature the most durable construction of any race day shoe. It also looks really good. The only downside? It’s $300. But if you’re looking for style in spades or something that will stand out on race day while still giving you premium performance, then the Gara Carbon may be your bello baby. Hoka Cielo X1 $275 KEY FEATURES Two layers of Peba foam, smooth midsole rocker, winged carbon fiber plate, snug upper WEIGHT 9.3 oz. (264 g) for a US M10, 7.4 oz. (210 g) for a US W8 STACK HEIGHT/DROP 39 mm in heel, 32 mm in forefoot (7 mm drop) We weren’t sure what to think of this shoe when we first put it on our feet. We’re still not even sure. Is it a trainer, or is it a racing shoe? Or is it neither? We think it can be all things, depending on what you’re looking for. What we do know is that this is the most fun shoe that money can buy right now. The accentuated rocker geometry paired with an ultra-high stack of Peba foam around a winged carbon fiber plate (whew, that’s a lot) gives this shoe a trampoline effect if there ever was one. It feels like you’re bounding along with little effort. The upper is also form-fitting and perfectly suited for the ride (even if we didn’t love the laces). Honestly, it feels like a unique shoe that puts Hoka back in the driver’s seat when it comes to cool running shoes. While we wouldn’t race super fast in this shoe, it could be a great choice for first-time marathoners. Hoka Rocket X 2 $250 KEY FEATURES Solid stability with wide base, full Peba midsole, carbon fiber plate, rocker geometry, grippy zonal rubber outsole WEIGHT 8.3
